Spam Roundup - June 2007
It's time for our bi-weekly spam round-up at SpamButcher again. Roughly once every two weeks the assigned "spam master" (that's usually me) rounds up spam that the butcher missed from various sources into one, large steaming pile.
Then, using numerous patent-pending methods we start to sift through the gelatinous blob. Hopefully we find some common trends that we can incorporate into the next revision of the software. While we like to boast that SpamButcher doesn't need to be updated as often as other products intended to
stop unwanted emails, our sales figures tell us that keeping things fresh is good for our pocket books.
Here's what we've found this time around.
Some spam seems to be getting sent from the past, and I don't just mean that email sent last Tuesday is showing up now.
There are a handful of messages in the pile that date back to 2005 and 2003. We've noticed spam being sent from the future for a while now, but this is new. The motive is likely the same. Spam sent from the past automatically gets sorted to either the bottom or the top of your inbox where it may be more likely to be read. Even if the message is caught by Outlook anti-spam, it will show up first in the junk mail folder and would be more likely opened as a result.
This may be a fluke, so we'll hold of on writing any code to look for it.
Stock spam went away for a while, but is certainly back now.
It seems the actions the FTC made against spammed stocks scared off the culprits for a while. They're at it again now though.
Another oldie but goodie seems to be making a comeback - advertisements claiming to enlarge your ding-a-ling.
Some are reserved - only eluding to the service offered with sparse language like, "you can make it bigger." Others include extensive formatting and images. My favorite one includes an image of a innocent looking young woman holding her hands about a foot apart as if to suggest the result of the product.
That's enough writing for now. I've got to go have a "converstation with the butcher" about how to best slaughter this stuff.
