Spammers Attack Spamhaus
June 7th, 2007
Spammers have taken the offensive, and launched a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack against Spamhaus. At last check, the Spamhaus website appears to be online.
Spamhaus runs several DNS blacklists. Many server operators worldwide utilize these lists to help minimize how much spam their users get. When spammers succeed at taking a blacklist offline, users of that blacklist may experience performance problems with their email. This is one reason SpamButcher's mail filtering doesn't enable its blacklist support by default.
A denial of service attack is a kind of hacking attempt which intends to make the victim's services unavailable to others. This is in contrast to what most people think of as hacking. The hack may not even use any specific security exploits - sometimes their method is to simply overwhelm the victim with more requests than their servers can handle.
Spammers have been using networks of hacked systems to send spam for sometime now. One or more spammers appear to have simply redeployed part of their harem to go on proactive attack against anti-spam forces as opposed to send junk.
