A few things you can do to battle spam for free.

While prevention is always best, there are a handful of things you can do to reduce your spam burden after-the-fact without purchasing a product like SpamButcher.

Mainly, most email clients let you setup custom message rules which can divert or delete messages with certain content as you see fit. This in effect lets you setup custom spam filters for Outlook Express and most other messaging clients.

Ultimately most anti-spam programs are a compilation of these kinds of rules with some added intelligence.

Kill your spam buddy

Spam Buddies are email addresses that seem to always show up next to yours in spam. By adding a filter for them you might be able to reduce your spam substantially.

Unsubscribe = Spam

The only exception to this rule might be some newsletters or mailing lists. With most email clients, you can setup exceptions to rules so that you still get your gardening tips sent to your inbox.

.INFO = .SPAM

The .info domain is almost entirely used for spam. While the string ".info" might occur at random in a legit email, it should be pretty rare. Periodic false positives are a problem with even the best spam filters.

If possible, add a trailing space to the filter to reduce the odds of blocking messages on accident. A very brief, informal study suggests 15% to 20% of all spam contains a link or email address using a .INFO domain.

There are certainly more, but I suspect those three suggestions will kill between 25% and 50% of all spam for most users. Another trick is to delete messages that aren't in your native tongue - but that gets a bit tricky to get into in this article.
