If I ignore it - maybe it will just go away...

There's been one batch of spam that's been eating me as of late.

It's one of those mysterious "empty spam" campaigns with no obvious purpose. There aren't any links to click, stocks to buy, or phone numbers to call. It's just composed of random words. This makes it extra-tough for spam protection software to parse correctly.

I started doing some heavier analysis to see if there was anything I could do to stop it. Here's what I figured out.

With all this data, I'm coming pretty close to creating some algorithms that could stop unwanted emails like these without creating a large risk to other email. However, I'm not sure if it's worth the time at this point.

Now that I've collected maybe 100 of these messages, the campaign appears to be on it's way out; shuffling off this mortal coil as strangely as it entered. At its peak, I saw about 8 messages daily. Now I'm only seeing about one message every 5 days.

So, for now these mystery messages are filed under my, "maybe I'll look at this again if it becomes a problem" folder. This is the same approach I use when deciding if I need to go to the dentist or not.
