Chain LettersSome chain letters are specifically sent to you by someone you know. While sometimes annoying, these emails can't really count as spam.However, often chain letters are sent to everyone in someone's contact list. This can result in hundreds or even thousands of people getting a message they really have no interest in. While they may not be specifically commercial, I'll still lump them into the spam pile. As someone who regularly exchanges email with users, I often receive these. The senders are generally not my favorite customers. Sometimes the message is political or religious in nature. Others might tell the story of a dying child with cancer whose only wish is that everyone in North America send them a postcard. Often the messages are not quite factual in nature - but rather urban legends. Snopes has a series of articles on this spam-like email. For good or bad, programs that block spam rarely if ever kill chain letters.
Legit Opt-in Lists, Security Update Notifications, Automated RepliesThis is email that we can't completely say we didn't ask for, but now that we're getting it, it's not entirely wanted. Yet, it's often marginally important enough where we're not willing to take the steps to get rid of it when we can. These messages are usually machine-generated.Collectively, these not-quite spam emails have recently been termed, "Bacn". No, I don't understand why it's spelled wrong. Maybe it's a web 2.0 thing. Unlike chain-letters, email filters frequently do tag these messages as spam.
