Types of Spam (Part 1)
The term, "spam" has come encompass so many different things, it's hard to keep track.
Classic Spam
Someone wants to sell you something, so they send you an email. The message is not from someone who you gave permission to send you messages with commercial content.
The email contains some type of contact information that allows you to actually make the purchase. Usually this is a URL to a website, but can sometimes be a phone number to call. This information may be presented in plain text, a picture or an attached document like a PDF.
Spammers have resorted to a long list of ploys to try to stay under the radar of efforts to control spam. Often they will intentionally garble words, or hide their messages inside near-illegible text within an image.
So far I haven't seen spam in the form of attached audio files, but it would only seem a matter of time. Hopefully I haven't given anyone any ideas.
Less often the spam may encourage the recipient to reply in email or even send an instant message to an address. If the user does, they will probably get a response pointing them to a website.
Stock Spam
Someone wants to artificially inflate the trading price of a certain equity they own. To do so, they email four million of their best friends claiming they should all buy it because the price will almost certainly skyrocket. A few do, and sometimes the share price really does shoot up a little. The spammer then sells, possibly making a nice profit.
Again, the email message may be contained inside an image or PDF to better hide from mail filtering. Recent messages have pointed to the stock's profile on legitimate financial sites.
