Cell Phone Spam (and so it begins)

Most people who have cell phones at some point have gotten a random spam message sent via SMS. However, I've never heard of a user who's been inundated with mobile spam messages the same way they are with their standard email account.

There are many reasons why SMS spam may be relatively rare:

A company called Intelius has setup a website where private cell phone numbers can be looked up for a fee.

So why does this impact SMS spam? Once a database is compiled, it will probably only be a matter of time until that data is sold to or otherwise obtained by spammers. Don't forget that millions of AOL addresses were stolen, then sold to spammers only a few years back.

With one less hurdle for spammers to leap, we may all be getting a lot more junk on our cell phones in years to come. I'd feel better if that data wasn't sitting all in one spot.
