Are the Russians out to get me?
10/03/07
Out of 403 spam intercepted so far today, 125 were Russian B2B spam. That's almost one third of all junk e-mail sent to me!
Some of the emails are written in Russian but are sent from servers located in China. The good news is that SpamButcher has no problem figuring out to delete these messages. In fact, if a message is sent from China or is in Russian, it's going to get nixed by any anti spam tool worth its salt.
Tip - if you've got a Russian friend who's living in China - you definitely need to include them in your whitelist.
But here's what I don't get. I've searched up and down for any news articles / blogs / etc. reporting a huge increase in Russian language spam. While I've been able to find a few Usenet reports of some of the messages I've been getting, no one else seems to be suffering such a barrage of Russian email.
While other people are certainly getting these messages, for some reason I'm getting hammered with them out of proportion.
Perhaps someone's trying to retaliate for my suggestion that blocking certain countries may be a useful way to deal with certain unsolicited traffic.
