Arrogant Bastard was my first attempt at a combat robot. I built it after seeing an AntWeight competition put on by Western Allied Robotics in Seattle (April of 2002).

I didn't really know anything how to build a robot when I started - and I didn't know much more when I was done.

The name is taken from a fine ale made by Stone Brewing.

The electronics are all from a $19.95 remote control car - overvolted from 3v to 6v. The blade motor is actuated via relays whenever the bot gets a signal.

SpamButcher Combat Robotics is funded by SpamButcher - an advanced spam filter.

I thought I'd save money over using "proper" RC electronics - but I ended up wrecking so many parts - I suspect I didn't come out ahead.

The Bastard is a bit much to control - all the weight is up front, with the drive wheels in back - traction isn't so great.

The bot works pretty dang well though. I took third place at my first ever competition - da Vinci Days AntWeight Tournament in Corvalis Oregon.

Arrogant Bastard isn't compliant with a number of recent rule changes - so is currently retired. Plans for his successor - Double Bastard are underway...

Weight: Just under 16oz
Batteries: 4.8v x 500mah NIMH
Blade: Carbide (from a Sawzall)
Build Time: 100 hours(?)
Cost: Too much.
