Illegal Roadside Advertisements - 'Street Spam'

Spam has a close relative in the physical world - "street spam." These are unwanted signs placed on telephone polls are other places.

In many areas these signs are outright illegal. In others there are regulations on the ads limiting the duration they can be posted.

Frequently street spammers ignore the rules - making the signs technically litter and fair game for removal by concerned citizens.

In the worst cases - the street spam may even imitate a legitimate department of transportation sign to get your attention.

Unfortunately spam filters have no effects on these signs.

There are however organizations of street spam killers like http://www.causs.org.

They advocate taking the problem into your own hands and removing or defacing signs that are illegal. These spam fighters are sometimes known as "sharks."

I of course wouldn't advise anything like that.
