Tsunami Spammer Planned to Keep CashOn Thursday Matthew Schmieder was arrested for sending hundreds of thousands of unwanted spam emails soliciting donations for Tsunami victims.The 800,000 messages falsely claimed to be sent on the behalf of the Mercy Corps. The spam messages provided instructions on how to make Paypal payments going directly to Schmieder's account. Paypal claims that his account had less than $200 in it. It is unclear if he failed to raise any significant amount of money, or may have transferred it elsewhere. Schmieder has subsequently been released on bail. Apparently he had planned to use the money to pay bills and make car repairs. Mercy Corps contacted the FBI after receiving complaints of the bogus spam mail via its website.
