Net Regulators Try to End Spam
Network regulators from all over the planet gathered last week to discuss possible ways to reduce or eliminate the amount of spam on the internet.
Network administrators have several tools available to them to fight spam. The most common practice is blacklisting the addresses of major offenders. Some administrators may also block hosts which are the source of large amount of SMTP traffic. SMTP is the protocol most commonly used to send email messages.
Some service providers actually block all SMTP traffic except to their own servers. While this can cause issues for some users trying to send legitimate email through alternative providers, it does considerably cut down on issues with spam.
Approximately 80 percent of all messages sent are believed to be spam according to the ITU. The meeting focused on possible future legal regulations.
