MS Files Anti-Spam Lawsuits (again)

Microsoft recently sued seven people / organizations who it believes have violated U.S. laws aimed at stopping spam.

The company has claimed the entities in question have sent millions of unwanted emails to people using misleading subjects and bogus unsubscribe links. This would make the messages in violation of the CAN-SPAM act.

The accused spammers also took over third-parties computer systems to do their deeds. This not only lets them take the load of their own computers - but can make the messages harder to detect by spam email filtering software.

"Sexually explicit materials and publications for sale in stores are required by [US] law to be covered from view with a brown paper wrapper, and it's important that consumers are protected online in the same way," according to Nancy Anderson - Microsoft's deputy general counsel.

It's unclear specifically what Microsoft's claim to damage in this case is. Historically its lawsuits aimed to prevent spam have been as a result of expenses incurred by its Hotmail operations.
