No, shutting down your mail server for two days won't stop spam.

Recently slashdot.org published a story about how some blogger's sys admin took down their exchange server at work for 2 days - and voila - their spam problem was almost gone. He was getting about 400 pieces / day - now he's down to just a handful. His conclusion - taking down your email server for two days can solve stop spam mail.

He published a long step by step list on how you to can take your mail server offline in order to block emails you don't want..

He even speculated that maybe taking the server down for a few more days might stop the rest of the junk email he continues to get.

He is not very smart.

There are all sorts of reasons this doesn't make sense from a technological standpoint - but that isn't what frustrates me. It's the lack of logical reasoning that makes me tear my hair out.

Slashdot publishes this kind of crap on a fairly regular basis. Maybe they just do it to get my (and others) goat.

Oh - the reason the mail server was taken offline? So Exchange Server could be upgraded to a new version with (drum roll please) - it has a better spam detector.
