Data tsar seeks spam stopping power

Richard Thomas - the "Data Tsar" of the UK wants more power to block spam.

Thomas said that he expects new enforcement authority to grant him legal status to make "stop spam" orders to spammers - requiring them to cease operations on request.

To date using anti-spam software has been the only option for end-users wanting to fight spam.

According to Thomas - there isn't so much a requirement for new anti-spam law - just authority to enforce existing codes and regulations.

A survey performed by MessageLabs indicates that 60% of companies will search for an alternate way to communicate besides email within 10 years if spam keeps increasing.
