MDA Tries to Stop Mobile Spam

The Mobile Data Association has proposed a new scheme requiring mobile text message senders to accept "STOP" requests sent by their recipients.

This is highly analogous to the CAN-SPAM legislation requiring spammers to honor "unsubscribe" requests. So far, the email senders have generally ignored the new law. Many spammers are already in violation of the law. That they fail to comply with new laws is not surprising.

The initiative has been approved by the Anti-Spam Technical Alliance (ASTA) which includes AOL, Microsoft, Comcast and other companies seeking to develop better spam filtering and other solutions to spam.

It is unclear if this standard is only an industry agreement - or if the intent is to legislate compliance.
