Sender Policy Framework to Stop Spam?

This week open source organization ASSP implemented Sender Policy Framework on its servers.

SPF is a set of extensions to the SMTP mail sending protocol. It uses DNS to validate the senders IP address (either the origination computer, or the originating server for the email).

If a server's identity does not validate properly, messages from it may be considered spam.

This technology is actually very similar to the existing DNS Blacklist approach - except that it requires the server to positively identify that it is good, as opposed to checking to see if the server is from a list of known bad internet addresses.

Like many anti-spam technologies , this system will probably help to catch some spam, but is unlikely to turn the tide in the war on spam.
