A Better Spam Filter Program

When creating the SpamButcher spam filter program, there was only one goal: to develop a junk mail filter for end-users that actually worked. Several innovations appeared in the first version of the product that were not yet available on the market.

The most important was arguably the use of fuzzy logic technology to identify junk messages. Fuzzy logic provided the framework that enabled more accurate detection than existing filter technologies did. Fuzzy logic also allows the filtering mechanism to go longer periods of time between updates before significantly losing accuracy.

Some other artificial-intelligence-type spam products were also beginning to be released around the same time. However, most of them depended on machine-learning - which required users spend their valuable time training them to gain reasonable accuracy at blocking mail. In contrast, fuzzy logic let the SpamButcher spam filter program block junk messages with a good accuracy rate immediately after installation.

Another feature initially introduced to the spam filter program market via SpamButcher was email reporting of blocked messages. The automated reports allow users to review all messages caught by the e-mail spam blocker over a given period of time directly from their email client. With most email clients, the user can even recover the message back to their inbox by simply clicking on it in the report.
