Back to microcontrollers...

BasicAtom Pro

The Basic Micro's BasicAtom Pro packs pretty serious computing power compared to the other BASIC intrepeter chips.

It has 2k (2000 bytes) of variable memory, and 32k of program space.

It can handle about 100,000 BASIC instructions / second.

And the price is just $49.95 - same as the non-pro version of the chip.

So what's the catch? Well...

The documentation as it stands has some significant accuracy problems (they are apparently working on this). Mandatory parameters are sometimes listed as being optional. Sometimes leaving them out results in the chip resetting.

Some functions like PULSIN don't produce reliable results (the support forums indicate I'm not alone in observing this). I've spent a lot of time hacking up my own routines to make stuff work.

The chip advertises a built-in servo controller. If you actually use it - it messes up any timing related functions (just about any kind of I/O), so it's not all that useful.

Another bummer is there's no EEPROM space accessible from your program. That is - there's no way to store information that will persist through a reboot.

Once you figure all this out - the chip does work pretty well. However, for the time being - unless you really need a full 2k of variable space - I'm more prone to recommend the non-pro version of the BasicAtom.
