Cutting Edge Spam Elimination
SpamButcher's powerful filtering system can keep most junk email out of your email client's inbox.
Low Quality, High Deliverability
Ever more email that slips past my spam filter that has content like the following:
Your position has been considered to the important ends, and upon
evaluating, we can off this opportunity.
Please type seventeen dot zipsquirt dot net into your internet
viewing program to see more.
As I pour over these, I try to consider what possible information could be worked into SpamButcher to better recognize and detect these messages. When looking at two different sample messages from the same campaign, it becomes clear that they have virtually no text in common between the two of them. I'm able to recognize them both as spam, but the email blocking software still isn't quite as smart as a human.
The creator of the message clearly understood what they needed to avoid. No actual URL's, no "unsubscribe" notice, no reference to, "clicking here." The message looks terrible, and one has to wonder if anyone will actually go to that website, let alone purchase something from it.
However, he can be fairly sure that a large portion of his mailing got delivered. The underlying question is if this quality of spam is profitable. If it is, we'll see more of it. If it's not, it will presumably fade away.
DNS blacklists can help block junk messages, even when there's not content indicating one way or the other. However, DNSBL's have had reliability problems, so it was decided to leave that option off by default. Some further safeguards will have to be developed before that policy changes. The value of DNSBL's also appears to be on the decline as they are less effective against spam sent by botnets or zombie systems.
