Spam Email in 2006

Dateline: Late 2005

So what will the year 2006 offer end-users seeking relief from spam?

Well, I can see the future, and it makes me wish that I was blind. The email revolution may be televised (or blogged), but it won't be happening this year.

CAN-SPAM

The federal government did push a few prosecutions forward in 2005 involving the CAN-SPAM act. However, there's no indication this actually helped. Still, the argument can be made that things would have been all the worse without the new law. Nearly all spam is not compliant with the law, but it's clearly out of the ability of the FTC to provide comprehensive enforcement. Look for more of the same in 2006.

Anti-Spam Software

I hate to say it, but nearly every trick under the sun has already been employed to filter email spam. The best filters are good, but keeping up with shifting trends in spam is difficult. SpamButcher is currently catching between 95% and 98% of spam sent to test accounts. Expect similar results in 2006 for both SpamButcher and the highest quality competing products.

Spammer's Tactics

2005 saw an increase in "ugly" spam. This includes messages with highly randomized content in an effort to bypass filtering. Most likely, these messages don't convert to sales as well for the senders. They represent an act of desperation to improve deliverability. As more users adopt programs for blocking email spam, expect these low-quality messages to become even more prevalent.

Email Protocols

It's been stated before, but to really get rid of spam, the protocols behind email itself need to change. Even Bill Gates agrees with this. Sender ID and other similar technologies seem to pay homage to this notion, but fail to place adequate restrictions in order to really address the problem.

It's safe to say email protocols won't change in 2006, and likely not in 2007 either. Hopefully, Sender ID and its companions will be tossed aside, and the conversion regarding real reform to SMTP will continue. Look for actual changes later in the decade.
