Dirty Spamming Dozen

The U.S. has again topped the list of top spammers. According to the anti-spam email company Sophos - about 42% of all mail spam is sent from the United States.

The research is based on a technique known as "honey potting" - where web pages are setup with bogus email addresses for "robots" to scan. The spammers then send their trash to the harvested addresses.

This method is fairly good for detecting certain kinds of spam. However, much junk email is sent to previously established lists as opposed to fresh addresses found on the web.

This strategy can't take into account the differences in spam distribution patterns that this might lead to.

Sophos has cited it's findings as an indicator that the recently passed laws to prevent spam aren't working as intended.

South Korea and China ranked just behind the U.S. on the list.

While legal action hasn't helped the situation, quality spam blocker software is now abundantly available for users wanting to solve their problems with unwanted messages in their inbox.
