New Maryland Spam Law Goes into Effect

A new anti-spam law just went into effect in Maryland.

The new law intended to stop spam mail allows the attorney general to pursue spammers who hide their identities or hack other peoples computers in order to send spam.

Specifically it bans registering over 15 different false email addresses in to send spam. Penalties can include a jail term of up to 5 years and fines of up to $25,000. Individuals affected by spam can also seek compensation for damages in court.

Presumably the law has been designed to be legally compatible with the CAN-SPAM act. Considering there have been very few efforts to legally enforce the federal CAN-SPAM act, one has to wonder how much spam email protection the law will offer. However, some states such as Virginia and Washington have actively pursued spammers who have violated their laws.
