Canadian Court Rules Spam is Illegal Under Privacy Law

A professor at the U of Ottawa has used a new Canadian privacy law to get a legal ruling aimed at stopping spam email.

The professor contacts a federal privacy commissioner regarding concerns he had with the Ottawa Renegades (a football team) marketing methods.

The team obtained his email address from a U of Ottawa website - and then used it to attempt to sell him football tickets.

The commissioner decided that by sending him spam, the Renegades were in violation of the law.

It is unclear if this legal ruling has actually done anything to reduce the amount of junk e-mail he gets in his inbox.
