Microsoft to Create Anti-Fraud Blacklist
Microsoft is creating its own list of internet bad-boys which will be (at least optionally) blocked in Internet Explorer 7.0. Internet Explorer 6.0 which was released in 1992 (or at least seems like it) supports different security levels and adult-content regulation, but doesn't have a blacklist per-se.
Articles seem to indicate that the blacklist is not so much intended to fight e-mail spam as it is to target fraudulent websites which may be used for phishing. These websites are however frequently promoted via spam email campaigns.
The underlying technology for delivering the blacklists to end-user's computers is unclear. Email blacklists for spam utilize DNS technology to provide the latest data to enable spam filters to block email with improved accuracy. Microsoft has itself embraced DNS for various efforts including Active Directory, and more relevantly its Sender ID technology. Sender ID is vaguely marketed as a technology to help filter junk mail, but it is only helpful in detecting a small portion of fraud oriented messages.
While Microsoft has been criticized for not doing enough to protect end-users from internet security risks, Microsoft running a blacklist brings some concerns with it. The potential for abuse is there in that it would effectively allow them to ban sites for whatever reason it chooses.
