Has the Amount of Spam Leveled?

According to data from Symantec's Brightmail spam solutions group, the level of spam has stabilized.

It's figures show that spam has made up about 2 out of 3 (66%) email messages for the last four months straight.

Their data also indicates that spam hit 50% of all e-mail traffic around July 2003. So the growth since then has been steady, but not exponential.

Messagelabs, another maker of software to remove spam in contrast has claimed that spam composed 74% of all messages. The same company claimed that in July the total was 94% of all e-mail.

(I think someone's having trouble with their math.)

I have to have some sympathy though. At one point SpamButcher set up an index called SpamSpotting to try to measure how much spam was being sent. Numerous problems with the data caused the index to be of questionable accuracy.
