Spam in Israel

One man is apparently responsibly for half of all spam sent in Israel.

According to Haaretz magazine, 30 year old Amir Gans is the nations most prolific spammer. Gans specifically targets Hebrew speakers and works hard to come up with only valid email addresses.

One possible reason he may be targeting Hebrew speakers is that most anti-spam programs only understand English. Spam removal mechanisms are unlikely to filter a message written in Hebrew.

He is closing in on his goal of having 4 million email addresses. Very impressive considering the nation only has a Jewish population of about 4.5 million.

He also tries to locate "quality" addresses - those of people who are known to have purchased from spammers in the past. Past behavior is a good indicator of what people will do in the future.
