Get Your Email Address Right!

Each day I get from a handful to dozens of support requests for this website's anti-spam product. I even get a few support from confused users of other spam blockers.

What consistently blows my mind is about 1 in 15 messages I reply to bounce back with an email message similar to the following:

------------------
This is the turbo-mail SMTP service at mail.peoplepc.com.
I'm afraid I was not able to deliver your email to the addresses listed below.
This error is permanent. I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.
If you need additional help, please contact support@peoplepc.com.

"Idontknowmyownaddress@peoplepc.com":

The responsible receiving server did not like this recipient.

550 Idontknowmyownaddress@peoplepc.com: No user with that address.
------------------
There's nothing more frustrating than writing a three paragraph email, and having it go no place. More often than not, these support requests involve problems with their account settings in SpamButcher. This makes a lot of sense, as they probably never managed to setup their email client properly.

Sometimes similar messages will come back due to server-side spam control measures. That's not the case this time. You see, Idontknowmyownaddress@peoplepc.com does not know their own email address. More likely, they've just entered wrong into their email client. Yes, this poor soul probably thinks no one ever answers their email.

It's easier to get in this situation than it sounds.

Your email address may or may not be the same as your logon. Just because you're able to logon to your server to check email, doesn't mean you're setup properly.

Most email clients let you enter a different "reply-to" address than your regular email address. If you make a typo when entering the "reply-to," when people reply to your email, it will bounce, or maybe end up in someone else's inbox.

There's an easy test to make sure you're not in this situation. Try sending an email to yourself. Did you get it? Good. Now, reply back to your own email. Did you get that? If so - you're in good shape. If you still never get email from anyone, it may just be because they don't like you.
