Microsoft and Pfizer Target Viagra Spam

Commonly spammers pitch what they claim is Viagra (or at least something similar) in their messages. In question is whether the goods for sale are really what's advertised. Frequently the goods may not be legal at all.

According to the company, many people are fooled into thinking the spam messages they are getting are really sent by Pfizer. Pfizer claims to never engage in such marketing.

Pfizer is initially going after 12 different websites that sell imitation Viagra. They are suing on the grounds of trademark infringement as opposed to violation of anti-spam law. The CAN-SPAM act doesn't offer any special remedies for manufacturers who have their products pirated.

Since Microsoft's networks were involved with the spamming, it is however able to take advantage of the CAN-SPAM legislation. As part of Microsoft's program to stop spam, it is suing five of the companies involved.
