Stopping Visual Spam

A company by the name of SeeFree is apparently selling a pair of sunglasses that provide a visual anti-spam filter. Their definition of visual spam includes most advertisements such as billboards and other commercial signs.

There are some distinct differences between most public advertisements and spam. Public ads usually don't use your resources or steal your time like spam does. Public advertisements also are usually posted on private property according to certain regulations.

Most signs are probably more akin to the ads that appear on search engines. They may be annoying - but they don't constitute theft of services the same way spam can. Advertisers usually comply with sign regulations. In contrast, spammers almost always ignore laws intended to prevent spam email.

There is of course such a thing as "street spam" - where advertisers effectively litter their advertisements of light posts and other public structures.

The exact technology behind the magical sunglasses isn't elaborated on. I would assume they operate in a similar fashion to many email spam blockers.

They apparently run on battery power, and can tell the difference between signs containing useful information, and those that are truly just annoying.
