SpamButcher to Develop Anticipated Sender Standard
Update:
The Anticipated Sender standard is now available here.
A problem plaguing all anti-spam solutions to some degree is the issue of falsely filtered messages.
Wanted email messages such as newsletters and sales receipts often contain many elements in common with spam messages. Embedded images, "unsubscribe" notices and multiple recipients can cause spam filters to inaccurately tag a message as being spam.
The anti-spam software provider, SpamButcher (http://www.spambutcher.com) is working to provide a solution to this issue.
Anticipated Sender would help address this problem by providing a standardized way of telling a user's spam filter that an email sender is validated as being legitimate.
When a user subscribes to an email newsletter via a website, their web browser would be sent a special file containing the sender's email address and other information. This file would then be passed on to the user's spam filter, which would prompt them if they would like to add the mailer to their list of validated email senders.
Other efforts to ensure email delivery have depended on a centralized database of validated senders. In contrast, Anticipated Sender has the advantage of letting the user specifically decide which senders to allow. With the centralized solution, users have to trust a third-party to accurately decide who's a spammer and who's not.
Anticipated Sender will be an open standard which can be used by anyone without charge, including SpamButcher's competitors. The required underlying technology is already supported across all popular operating systems and web browsers.
Once details of the standard are finalized, the specification will be published via www.spambutcher.com.
