Spammer in the Slammer

A Florida spam sender has been given a one year prison term for sending junk e-mail to millions of users. He pleaded guilty. His sentence also includes a three year suspended sentence and six years of probation.

He used an account with BellSouth to send the junk messages. BellSouth worked with law enforcement to identify the spammer and bring them to justice. Earthlink has also engaged in similar efforts to block spam e-mail from taking over its networks.

At this point it's unclear which laws were specifically used to bring the charges. Many anti-spam lawsuits have either focused around regional legislation. Some use laws not even originally intended to combat spam. Spammers often engage in theft of services or hacking to perform their deeds. They also often pitch goods which are themselves fraudulent.
