China Signs Anti-Spam Pact

China recently signed onto an anti spam email pact with other nations including Great Britain to take a stance against junk email.

China is the source of a substantial portion of spam email. Since most of the spam is targeted outside the country, one has to assume that the Chinese economy benefits from these activities. This brings into question the motives of participating in such a treaty.

Chinese spam frequently pitches internet hosting services to western countries. Often the advertisements boast how the services our outside of regulations that attempt to place limits of activities involving illegal software or sending unwanted e-mails.

However, the massive amount of junk email from China does create some problems for the country. Many network administrators have taken to simply banning all traffic from China and other countries in the region. Due to the relatively small amount of legitimate traffic, this is often a practical option. This can be a major problem for citizens attempting to access the internet. Entire portions of the internet simply appear black.
