Blacklisted
I just had a support message I sent to a customer bounce. It turns out SpamButcher.com is listed in the "Spews 2" database. Their server thought SpamButcher might have been sending them spam.
Why you ask?
SpamButcher is hosted with a provider called Linode. I'm quite happy with the service they provide and don't plan on leaving them in the near future. Linode in turn is a customer of Hurricane Electric.
Hurricane Electric has in the past provided services for spammers.
Spews has the full right to list whoever they want in their database. In fact, Spews 2 is their more "aggressive" database. Hurricane Electric (and hence Linode, and in turn SpamButcher) are not listed in their regular database. This appears to be yet another case of an overzealous system administrator focused on stopping spam email.
The problem is that Spews 2 probably shouldn't be used on its own for to block spam. It's better used in conjunction with other blacklists and content filtering. In fact, SpamButcher's email spam filter can be configured to use Spews 2, but as with all blacklists, it only considers it along with other factors.
Open RBL offers realtime information on which blacklists list which hosts. It seems almost all providers are listed on at least one blacklist.
This is just one more piece of evidence that the spam problem needs to be addressed at a more fundamental level.
