Getting more spam? I am, I am!

Three hundred or four hundred spam emails per day is pretty normal for me. The last few weeks I've seen as many as six hundred in my main inbox. Yes, the SpamButcher anti-spam utility gets nearly all of it, but I still have to write about something. Apparently - I'm not the only one who's been experiencing this:

For that matter someone recently knocked on my door wanting to talk to me about affordable health care. Apparently my "No Solicitations - This Means You" sign is about as good as trying to unsubscribe.

Sometimes the hard ones to catch are the little one-offs. Rogue spammers that hand-compose a legitimate looking email for a single campaign can be tough to deal with.

These days, SpamButcher uses a lot of "network data" (no, I won't go into detail) to target spam. Statistically this extra info can stop a large chunk of the otherwise near-unidentifiable email. However, if a spammer targets your inbox with the same email being launched from 120 different hosts on different networks, some of it's probably going to look "clean."

In other news, spammers have apparently been buying up domain names owned by small islands on the theory that this will somehow fool filters. I haven't seen much of this first hand, but adapting for it should be easy compared to other tricks.
