IP Country Lookup

There are a number of anti-spam and otherwise IT related tasks where it can be really useful to know what country an IP address is from.

The need for a small, self-contained application to lookup what country an IP address belongs to is something we've come across at SpamButcher numerous times. So, we finally decided to code something up.

SpamButcher uses geo-location information for a number of purposes as a company - and not all of them are directly related to blocking spam. For instance, if an online order comes from a user claiming their address is located in Canada, but their IP is actually in Nigeria - you know something isn't right.

"IP Country Lookup" is truly a free tool. It's not trialware or spyware. We're not looking to make money off of it. It's just a nifty little app we decided to make for ourselves, and couldn't think of any good reason not to share it with others.

There are a number of websites that can provide this information, but they have their drawbacks.

For instance, http://blackholes.us has a comprehensive database of internet addresses by country. The data that IP Country Lookup uses is actually based off their list. Unfortunately it's often offline, and doesn't have an easy online interface to access it by.

Other sites offer incomplete databases which don't have information on a lot of IP addresses. Some are limited to a certain number of accesses per day unless you cough up some money.

IP Country Lookup has a pretty comprehensive built-in database of networks. It also will accept DNS hostnames and return both the corresponding IP and country.
