Spam up 100%? (According to IBM...)

In what's turning into a series of articles - yet another party has weighed in on how much spam has gone up, down or sideways of recent.

At SpamButcher we pretended to have a good system to figure out the answer to this question a couple years back. As I've said before, we were wrong. As a result, we're a bit skeptical of other organization's ability to measure the spam email phenomena in an objective context. The fact that major research groups disagree on if spam is even increasing or decreasing would seem to support this point.

The most recent claim is a spam increase of 100%. The evidence comes from a source that sounds impressive; International Business Machines (that's IBM).

IBM Internet Security Systems (ISS) X-Force recently released an article with a series of findings on both spam and other internet security issues.

They also looked into more abstract things regarding how sophisticated the malicious side of the internet has become.

For the record, "IBM Internet Security Systems (ISS) X-Force" is about the coolest name for a research group I've ever heard. Those marketing guys apparently have a clue.

We at SpamButcher primarily focus on how to stop spam email, but we also do a lot of related auxiliary research on how spam is impacting the internet in general. Let's take a look at a few of the group's findings, and how they compare with our own research.

  • There was about a 100% more spam sent in 2006 as opposed to 2005.

  • I generally agree. My own observations indicate a little less than this; maybe closer to 70%.

  • The United States, France and Spain are the three biggest spammers.

  • I agree the U.S. may be tops in this department. France and Spain are also big players. Germany, Canada and Australia in addition send a lot of spam. What's missing is that China and Korea send tons of spam, and send relatively few legitimate emails outside their borders.

There's a strong chance that an email sent from France or Spain may be perfectly valid. However, I have little concern about simply deleting anything originating from China or Korea (sorry guys).

  • English is the most popular spamming language. German is second.

  • I personally see a lot more spam in Chinese, Korean or Russian than in German.

  • The most common day of the week for companies to disclose security issues was Tuesday.

  • Our own research would indicate that security notifications are most commonly sent on days of the month which are prime numbers. The 11th, 13th and 29th seem specifically popular.
