Spam Me!
In the past, I have been foolish when it comes to avoiding spam. This was primarily because I was a fool.
A good chunk of keeping your inbox free of unwanted trash is not sharing your address with those who would send you advertising.
Here's a laundry list of my offenses:
I signed up for a webmail account. The provider then sold their list of accounts to "marketing partners" (not entirely my fault)
I signed up for various seemingly-legitimate online offers (totally my fault)
I posted messages to the Usenet using my real email address (seemed innocent at the time)
I registered domains "back in the day" - which caused my address to show up in a large, publicly accessible database (again, not so much my fault)
I may have even (gasp) signed up for an online dating site or two (my fault, but quite necessary).
A lot of people made similar errors in the mid 1990's - predating most problems with UCE and the corresponding spam filter programs.
I still have my old account, and it gets a lot of junk. Maybe 400 messages a day.
SpamButcher is a relatively new part of my life compared to my involvement with the internet. It presented an opportunity to "re-brand myself" as mynewaddress@spambutcher.com.
If I wanted, I could ditch my old account, and my spam-gathering ways. But I chose not to do this.
You see, the more spam gets sent to SpamButcher, the better we can understand the spam problem at large. This lets us make SpamButcher better
anti-spam software, improving sales and making more money for me.
So spammers, are you listening? I got a present for you. Please, send some junk to rich@spambutcher.com.
For that matter, someone in the sales department drank the last of the coffee without brewing a fresh batch. Sales@spambutcher.com could really use a little extra spam.
If you want to be able to post your address on the web like this without concern of getting spammed - I have a suggestion. SpamButcher offers a tool called SpamFreeze as a free service that let's you do just that.
