Filter Settings

On this screen you may select how aggressive SpamButcher should be when intercepting spam.

Conservative
Choose this option if you're having trouble with SpamButcher intercepting your legitimate e-mail. This setting will disable features in the filter that may cause some users problems. SpamButcher should still catch the majority of spam.

Normal
This is the default filter setting for SpamButcher. It should catch the vast majority of spam with very few false positives. Most users should leave this selected.

Aggressive
This option will cause SpamButcher to more aggressively filter spam. It is also more likely to inadvertently filter out legitimate e-mail. Selecting this option will also automatically enable DNS Blacklist support.

Attempt to block messages with dangerous attachments
Enabling the option causes SpamButcher to attempt to block dangerous attachments of this listed types.

Custom Filters and Attachment Blocking can override Known Good Senders
By default Known Good Senders override all other filters. Enabling this option causes Custom Filters and Attachment Blocking to take first priority. This may be useful for filtering out e-mail worms which may originate from Known Good Senders.

Permanently delete messages that are almost certainly spam
This option completely deletes some messages highly likely to be spam without sending them to the intercepted spam list first.

This reduces the number of messages the user must sift through when reviewing their intercepted spam list or spam reports.

Warning: Enabling this option causes some deleted messages to never be reported to the user. These messages are also not recoverable once deleted.

Examples of messages this option may delete:

- Messages from networks known to have serious spam problems
- Messages from Known Bad Senders or containing Known Bad Phrases defined the user
- Other messages SpamButcher finds highly likely to be spam
- Delivery failure messages (if "Block delivery failure messages" is enabled)

Block delivery failure messages (bounces)
This will cause SpamButcher to filter most bounce messages. This may be useful if you are experiencing excessive bounce messages due to spam "backscatter."

Warning: This will also cause SpamButcher to block legitimate delivery failure reports and other warning messages from your mail server. It may also cause problems for some challenge-response anti-spam systems.

Most users should leave this option off.

Check domains for known problem networks
This option causes SpamButcher to perform a DNS lookup on certain domains contained within email messages and compare the resulting IP address against an internal database of known problematic networks.

This option can help SpamButcher catch significantly more spam.

If you are having problems with SpamButcher hanging or performing slowly, disable this option.

Lookup WHOIS data for domains
This option causes SpamButcher to perform a WHOIS lookup on certain domains contained within email messages to look for indications the domain is associated with spam.

This option can help SpamButcher catch significantly more spam.

If you are having problems with SpamButcher hanging or performing slowly, disable this option.

Enable DNS blacklist support
Selecting this option enables SpamButcher to use a DNS Blacklist - an online list of networks known to host spammers. Using a DNS Blacklists can help SpamButcher catch more spam - but can also cause performance issues, and sometimes cause legitimate e-mail to get blocked.

There are many different DNS Blacklist servers available - if you enable this option, you will be prompted if you'd like to check with www.spambutcher.com to determine which one is currently recommended.

If you are having problems with SpamButcher hanging or performing slowly, disable this option.

Set Blacklist Server
Clicking this button lets you choose which DNS Blacklist server SpamButcher will use. You will be prompted if you'd like to check with www.spambutcher.com to determine which server is currently recommended.

Custom Filters
This option allows you to define custom filters that override SpamButcher's internal filtering system. Most users should not need to define custom filters.
